Mondelēz International and packaging group Amcor have scaled the use of certified recycled plastic across Cadbury’s seasonal product lines in the UK and Ireland. The partnership will see approximately 134 tonnes of post-consumer recycled material integrated into the 2026 Easter range, marking a significant shift toward circularity for one of Europe’s highest-volume confectionery events.

The initiative utilizes Amcor’s AmFiniti technology, which processes plastic waste into flexible film. Under the new specifications, Cadbury Mini Eggs bags will consist of 65% certified recycled plastic, while the Easter chocolate tablet range will reach 80%. The rollout covers an estimated 70 million bags and 16 million tablets, with the material sourced through an ISCC-verified mass balance supply chain.

This commercial expansion arrives as the consumer goods industry faces tightening environmental benchmarks. The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which begins its phased application in August 2026, mandates increased recycled content targets through 2030. By securing multi-year supply agreements for certified materials now, large-scale manufacturers aim to mitigate future regulatory risks and supply chain volatility.

For Mondelēz, the move supports a broader corporate strategy to reduce the use of virgin plastic by 25% by 2030. Currently, 96% of the company's packaging is designed to be recyclable. For Amcor, the project serves as a high-volume validation of its recycled film technology within a complex, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) environment.

To improve consumer transparency, the new packaging includes QR codes that provide data on the recycled material's origins. As the industry moves toward the 2026 PPWR deadlines, the transition from pilot programs to mass-market application suggests that technical barriers to recycled flexible plastic are gradually being overcome at scale.
